William Joseph Douton - Titanic Second Class Passenger

Mr William Joseph Douton was a second class passenger travelling aboard Titanic from Southampton to New York, returning home to Holley, New York from a visit to Guernsey, in the Channel Islands, where he had relatives.

In around 1880 he was married to Emily Le Monnier (born in 1862); they probably married in Guernsey, which is where they lived. They moved to the United States in 1887.

He was part of a group of people aboard Titanic who were either recently on a visit to Guernsey or had lived there, including Peter Dan McKane, who was visiting, and William Joseph Douton’s goddaughter Lillian Winifred Bentham.

William Joseph Douton died when Titanic sank on 15th April 1912. His body is not known to have been recovered. His goddaughter survived.

There is a memorial to William Joseph Douton and Peter Dan McKane at Hillside Cemetery, Clarendon, New York. Included on the memorial is: "Erected in memory of W[illia]m Doughton & Peter McKain Lost at sea with S.S. Titanic Apr. 14. 1912" (sic).
