Sallie Monypeny Beckwith - Titanic First Class Passenger

Mrs Sallie Monypeny Beckwith was an American, 46 year old, first class passenger travelling aboard Titanic with her husband Richard Leonard Beckwith and her daughter Helen Monypeny Newsom.

Sallie Monypeny Beckwith and her family boarded Titanic at Southampton, UK to return home to New York after a trip to Europe. Along with her husband she occupied cabin D35. Her daughters ‘boyfriend’, Karl Howell Behr joined Titanic at Cherbourg, France. It is said that Sallie Monypeny Beckwith had taken her daughter on a trip to Europe to discourage her relationship with Karl Behr and allow for them to have time apart; this however, did not work as Karl Behr sailed to Europe himself for a business trip.

Sallie Monypeny Beckwith, the daughter of William and Maria Monypeny was born on Thursday 21st September 1865 in Columbus, Ohio into the wealthy Monypeny family. She married Logan Newsom and had two children, William Monypeny Newsom and Helen Monypeny Newsom. After Logan Newsom died she married Richard Beckwith.

After the passengers had been ordered on deck on the night of the sinking, Sallie Monypeny Beckwith, her family and Karl Behr were all allowed to board Lifeboat 5. Lifeboat 5 which was under the command of Third Officer Pitman was only the second lifeboat to leave the sinking ship.

Lifeboat 5 was safely rescued by RMS Carpathia the next morning. Onboard Carpathia Sallie Monypeny Beckwith and her family arrived home in New York on Thursday18th April.

Just under one year after the Titanic disaster, on Saturday 1st March 1913, her daughter Helen Monypeny Newman married Karl Behr.

Sallie Monypeny Beckwith died at her home in New York on Friday 11th February 1955, at the age of 89. She was buried at Ferncliff Cemetery and Mausoleum, Hartsdale, Westchester, New York. Her husband Richard Beckwith had died in 1933.
