On this day 112 years ago: Steaming towards New York on the third day of her her maiden voyage, Titanic received her first wireless message about ice ahead, sent by the French Line's La Touraine.

On this day 112 years ago, Titanic's last full day before hitting the iceberg, a fire which had broken out in one of the coal bunkers was finally extinguished. Titanic had left Southampton on her maiden voyage with the coal bunker on fire.

On this day 112 years ago: At 11.40pm Titanic's lookouts noticed an iceberg ahead. They rang the bell in warning and phoned the bridge. Titanic's engines were put in reverse and she was turned towards port, but it was too late, the iceberg struck, and the sea started to pour in.

On this day 112 years ago: Shortly after midnight, RMS Carpathia's radio operator received a distress call from Titanic 58 miles away. Carpathia was immediately turned around and headed towards the sinking Titanic. All 712 of Titanic's survivors were rescued by Carpathia.

On this day 112 years ago: As Carpathia was returning to New York with Titanic's survivors aboard, and despite some newspapers the day before claiming all had been saved or even the ship was safe, newspapers around the world started to print the true terrible story.

17th April:

On this day 112 years ago: With Carpathia still steaming to New York with Titanic's survivors, contracted by White Star Line, the cable laying ship Mackey-Bennet departed Halifax, Canada to recover Titanic's victims from the sea. In total Mackey-Bennet would recover 306.

On this day 112 years ago: Carpathia arrived in New York with Titanic's 712 survivors. Before docking at Cunard's pier, Carpathia stopped at White Star's pier to unload lifeboats from Titanic. In total Carpathia landed 13 lifeboats in New York, pretty much all that was left of Titanic.

On this day in 1912: The US Inquiry into the Titanic disaster began in New York. Joseph Bruce Ismay was the first to give evidence. SS Californian, which saw Titanic but was unaware she was sinking arrived in the US.

On this day in 1912, Titanic was supposed to have started her return maiden voyage from New York to Southampton. Instead, on the day, the majority of Titanic's surviving crew departed New York for home aboard SS Lapland. Some had to stay behind for the US Inquiry into the sinking.

On this day in 1912: The Mackay-Bennett properly began to retrieve Titanic's victims from the sea, including the remains of a child, buried as and known for many years as Titanic's "unknown child." In 2007 he was identified as Sidney Leslie Goodwin.
