Herbert Fuller Chaffee - Titanic First Class Passenger

Mr Herbert Fuller Chaffee was a 46 year old first class passenger traveling home to America from a trip to Europe with Carrie Constance Chaffee, his wife. They had boarded Titanic at the start of her maiden voyage from Southampton, and aboard the ship shared cabin E31.

Herbert Chaffee was born in Sharon, Connecticut, United States on 20th November 1865. His parents were Eben and Amanda Chaffee.

On 21 December 1887 he married Carrie Constance Toogood, and had six children, Eben Whitney Chaffee, born on 28th September 1888, Dorothy Adelia Chaffee, born on 15th June 1890, Herbert Lawrence Chaffee, born on 24th June 1892, Esther Carolyn Chaffee, born 10th May 1895 (Esther died on 10th January 1899), Florence Adele Chaffee, born on 2nd June 1900, and Lester Fuller Chaffee, born on 30th October 1902.

By the time he sailed aboard Titanic he managed various companies mostly involved with real estate and grain farming. The companies he managed were the Amenia & Sharon Land Company, the Miller-Chaffee-Reed Company, The John Miller Company, the Chaffee-Miller Milling Company and the Amenia Elevator Company.

He did not survive the Titanic disaster. His body is not known to have been recovered. His wife, Carrie Chaffee was rescued from Titanic in Lifeboat 4.

There is a memorial to him at Amenia Cemetery, Amenia, North Dakota, where his wife is buried. The following is found upon the memorial:
