Shadrach Gale - Titanic Second Class Passenger

Mr Shadrach Gale was a miner who was returning to America aboard Titanic from a visit home to Cornwall in Britain. As a second class passenger he boarded Titanic at Southampton on 10th April 1912, with his final destination being his home in Idaho Springs, Colorado. He was accompanied aboard Titanic by his brother Harry Gale who was leaving his home in Cornwall behind and was joining his brother in Idaho Springs, Colorado to, like his brother, be a miner there.

Shadrach Gale was born on 17th July 1878 in Harrowbarrow, Cornwall, United Kingdom. He moved to the United States perhaps a number of years prior to boarding Titanic, and settled in Idaho Springs, Colorado, where he worked as a miner. Just prior to the Titanic disaster he had returned home to Britain, to his family in Cornwall, for a visit.

Shadrach Gale died at sea on 15th April 1912 in the Titanic disaster. His body is not known to have been recovered. His brother also was lost in the disaster.

At St Andrew Churchyard, Calstock, Cornwall there is a memorial to Shadrach Gale and his brother. The memorial, which has Nearer my God to Thee written across the top, says the following: "Erected by Elijah and Maria Gale (of Harrowbarrow) in affectionate remembrance of their dearly beloved sons Harry aged 38 years and Shadrach aged 34 year. Who lost their lives in the Titanic disaster April 14th 1912. We often sit and think of them when we are alone for memory is the only thing that grief can call its own. For like ivy on the withered oak, when all other things decay, our love for them will still keep green and never fade away.“ It appears that their parents were later buried there.

There is also a memorial to Shadrach Gale at Idaho Springs Cemetery, saying: Shadrach. Son of Elijah & Maria Gale of Harrowbarrow, Calstock, Cornwall, England. Born July 17. 1879. Perished with the Titanic April 14. 1912. Erected by the Woodmen of the World.
